Sustainability and responsibility

Tart Modern is a responsible business committed to sustainability, reducing, re-using and recycling wherever possible. We will never compromise on quality where taste and enjoyment are paramount.

We are focused on provenance, integrity and supply chain transparency and our natas are made to an exact specification using raw materials that are sourced from world class suppliers.

Sustainability of ingredients

We are on a journey towards increased sustainability and so far we are proud to be able to say that:

  • Our suppliers source locally to keep food miles to a minimum
  • We only use pure cane sugar, free range eggs and wheat flour
  • There are no preservatives in any of our products
  • All our ingredients are natural with the exception of our margarine. However, we only use margarine which is made using 100% segregated RSPO palm oil, the highest sustainability standard in existence for this product.

Sustainability of packaging

  • During production, all ingredient packaging materials are separated for recycling, and all production waste is minimised and disposed of by environmentally sound processes.
  • All cardboard and corrugated packaging materials used in the transportation of products from our factory to our shops and kiosks are recycled and recyclable, designed for minimal wastage and to have the smallest possible carbon footprint in terms of logistics.
  • Much of our in-store customer packaging is recyclable and we are upgrading our laminated glossy boxes and bags to improve the amount we can recycle.
  • We don’t sell any plastic bottles and our branded espresso cups are compostable.

Future plans

In early 2020 we introduced a reusable branded Tart Modern tin. Not only does this tin help keep your natas tasting their best for longer, but it is given to customers absolutely free of charge when they pay for six natas! Our customers who bring their tins back to be refilled will then receive two free natas when they buy four, every time they visit. This is a fantastic way to help reduce wastage, save customers money and maximise the life of the product.

In time, we also plan to replace the aluminium tin foil cases used to bake the natas (which are in fact already recyclable) with paper baking cups that are much easier to recycle and to handle correctly.

Slightly longer term, we are also focusing on reducing, or even removing, the sugar content in the natas, reducing the calorie content and making it more suitable for diabetics. A vegan version, and even possibly a gluten free version may be developed at a future point.

Sustainability is a priority for us so stay tuned for further updates.
